1955 Porsche 356 Pre-A Sunroof Coupe
1955 Porsche 356 Pre-A Sunroof Coupe
A Porsche 356 Pre-A built in 1955
Initially the engine has had a number of problems. The camshaft sprocket was made of synthetic material and broke. The engine was taken out, repaired and rebuilt a couple of times. In 1961, again engine problems. This time with the cylinder lining. But factory guarantee was expired. Therefore my father decided to buy a 1954 Porsche 356 that had been in a accident. Its engine was transferred to my father’s Porsche, so he could drive it again.
In the meantime my father overhauled the original engine and he put it back in the Porsche. Early in the sixties the Porsche had a collission with a deer. The front right side had considerable damage. After the damage had been repaired, the door on the right hand side never properly opened and closed again. Next, the car started to show more and more rust. In those days cars weren’t well protected against rust. A courageous effort was made to restore the car. The rust holes were sealed with tape, and the front of the car was sprayed blue.
Jan Wigtenbroek retired in 1967. In 1968, the Porsche was in such a bad condition that he decided to store it in his garage, with the idea to restore it one day. In 1981 and in 1998 the Porsche 356, together with the damaged Porsche 356 were moved from one storage to another. On 17 February 2017 Jan Wigtenbroek passed away at the age of 95.
